MUNICH: Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane’s opening goal in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) saw the player set a new record for an English player.
Kane calmly converted the penalty after his teammate, Luis Diaz, was brought down in the penalty area.
The goal saw the England captain score in six consecutive Champions League matches – the best record ever set by an England player in the competition.
He surpassed the achievement of Steven Gerrard who previously scored in five consecutive games with Liverpool in the 2007/08 season.
The overall record is still held by Cristiano Ronaldo who has scored in 11 consecutive matches.
Across all competitions, Kane has now scored in eight consecutive games to equal his club career best, previously achieved at the start of the season.
This extraordinary performance also contributed to the total of 54 goals he has scored in all competitions this season.
That tally is the highest by any player in Europe’s top five leagues since former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored 55 goals in the 2019/20 season.
